Alder cones look somewhat like tiny pine cones and turn their typical brown color during Autumn. They contain the alder tree’s seeds and can be picked from the tree or collected from the ground. In smaller quantities, they help to gently lower the pH.

Usage
Some aquarists use about five cones per 10 gallons, but I recommend adding only one or two initially to avoid ph destabilization; these small cones are rich in tannin and humins. Rinse and add them directly to the aquarium. Replace once a month or leave them on, preferably. decompose quietly in the aquarium. Alder cones release the active substances for a period of about one month to six weeks.
